Our office offers a variety of significant opportunities for students to showcase their talents and get involved in public service:

Internship Program

In Kansas and in D.C., interns work with staff to serve the Kansas Third District. Responsibilities will vary depending on time of year and location, and may include answering phones, researching legislation, attending hearings and briefings, executing outreach events, and answering constituent letters. Learn more here.

Academy Nominations

There are five service academies in the United States which offer young men and women a free college education at highly-ranked, nationally-recognized academies, while preparing them for an officer's commission in the armed forces. The Air Force Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, the Military Academy at West Point, and the Naval Academy all require a nomination from an authorized nominating source. The Coast Guard Academy is the only armed forces service academy that offers appointments on the basis of an annual nationwide competition; there are no Congressional nominations. Congressional Art Competition

Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Congressional Art Competition, which began in 1982, is an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition since its inception. Learn more here.

Congressional App Competition

The Congressional App Competition, a competition designed to engage a student’s creativity and encourage their participation in computer science, was established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013. The competition is a nationwide event that allows high school students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice.
