Our office offers a variety of significant opportunities for students to showcase their talents and get involved in public service:

• Congressional Art Competition
• Academy Nominations
• Congressional App Competition
• Internships in Kansas and Washington, D.C.

Internship Program

In Kansas and in D.C., interns work with staff to serve the Kansas Third District. Responsibilities will vary depending on time of year and location, and may include answering phones, researching legislation, attending hearings and briefings, executing outreach events, and answering constituent letters. Academy Nominations

There are five service academies in the United States which offer young men and women a free college education at highly-ranked, nationally-recognized academies, while preparing them for an officer's commission in the armed forces. The Air Force Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, the Military Academy at West Point, and the Naval Academy all require a nomination from an authorized nominating source. The Coast Guard Academy is the only armed forces service academy that offers appointments on the basis of an annual nationwide competition; there are no Congressional nominations. Learn more here.

Congressional Art Competition

Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Congressional Art Competition, which began in 1982, is an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition since its inception. Learn more here.

Congressional App Competition

The Congressional App Competition, a competition designed to engage a student’s creativity and encourage their participation in computer science, was established by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013. The competition is a nationwide event that allows high school students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. The Congressional Award

The Congressional Award is the highest honor Congress bestows upon young Americans. It is a non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive program open to all youth ages 13.5 to 24, regardless of background or ability level. Rather than competing against others, participants set personal goals in four key program areas. As students achieve their goals at their own pace, they can earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold Certificates and Medals. It’s an incredible way for young Kansans to build discipline, give back to their local communities, and earn national recognition for their personal growth. Learn more here.
