$13.3M in federal funds to replace, rehabilitate Kansas City buses
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - More than $13 million in federal funding is headed to Kansas City to upgrade its public transit fleet and facilities.
Congresswoman Sharice Davids (D-KS) announced on Monday, March 9, that the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $13.3 million to the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority.
Rep. Davids indicated that the money will fund replacement buses and rehabilitation of a local bus facility.
Davids noted that the award comes through the Federal Transit Administration’s Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program.
She said the program provides funding to state and local transit agencies nationwide to purchase buses and vans and renew bus transport facilities.
The grant stems from a bipartisan funding agreement for Fiscal Year 2026, according to the Congresswoman.
What Leaders Are Saying
“This new federal investment means safer, more reliable buses and better service for the Kansans who depend on public transit every day,” said Davids. “Whether it’s getting to work, school, or a doctor’s appointment, strong transit systems keep our communities moving.”
Chuck Ferguson, Interim President and CEO of KCATA, said the timing is significant - particularly with the FIFA World Cup on the horizon.
“This grant will improve mobility for thousands of transit riders who depend on bus service every day, expanding access to employment, education, healthcare, and other important services in their communities,” Ferguson added.
Davids noted that the FY 2026 budget also includes an additional $9.2 million for Kansas projects, covering street signal replacements, intersection improvements and more.
