Lawmakers Urge Immediate Vote to Extend ACA Tax Credits Amid Rising Health Insurance Costs

November 20, 2025

Representative Sharice Davids and 58 other House Democrats are calling for an immediate vote to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, matching a promise already made in the Senate. They say this is urgent because, without action, Kansans could see their monthly health insurance premiums jump by an average of 77 percent, putting coverage at risk for millions of Americans.

Even though open enrollment is already underway, Congress can still step in. Extending the expanded ACA tax credits now could help slow down or reduce the premium increases expected in 2026.

If prices rise as projected, many healthier people may drop their insurance, leaving mostly those with chronic or expensive medical needs. That would push premiums even higher for everyone who remains on ACA plans.

Davids has warned about this for more than a year. She supports making the tax credits permanent and has repeatedly pushed Congress to act, including proposing amendments and holding press events with Kansans who depend on these savings.
