Davids Announces $1.5 Million for Johnson County Airport Upgrades, Celebrates Continued Impacts of Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

January 9, 2026

Today, Representative Sharice Davids announced the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded a total of $1,516,174 for infrastructure upgrades at two local airports in Johnson County. This new funding was made possible by the bipartisan infrastructure law, which Davids was the only member of the Kansas delegation to support.

“Johnson County sits at the heart of the country, giving our community a real chance to lead in transportation and logistics,” said Davids. “These airport upgrades from the bipartisan infrastructure law will boost safety, strengthen local businesses, create good-paying jobs, and help our region grow and thrive for years to come.”

These new federal investments will support efficient, fiscally responsible airport upgrades in line with the Johnson County Airport Commission's master plan, which supports economic growth and creates good-paying jobs for the region:

  • Johnson County Executive Airport: $712,500
    • For taxiway reconstruction and rehabilitation.
  • New Century AirCenter: $803,674
    • For new airfield signage and runway and lighting reconstruction.

Davids, a member of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, previously announced additional federal investment for the two airports. With more than 96,000 operations annually and 183 aircraft based on-site, New Century AirCenter is the second-busiest airport in Kansas. The Executive Airport, which is the fourth busiest towered airport in the state, sees more than 56,000 operations annually and has 143 aircraft based on site.

“These funds let us deliver high-impact improvements that enhance safety and prepare our airports to meet growing demand,” said Bryan Johnson, Executive Director, Johnson County Airport Commission. “Just as important, updating the airport’s master plan ensures we’re making smart, future-focused decisions about airfield infrastructure investments that support business expansion, create workforce opportunities, and sustain the momentum of the aviation industry in Johnson County.”

The bipartisan infrastructure law, which has been called the most fiscally responsible infrastructure bill in the last decade by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is funded through a combination of new revenues and existing savings. To date, more than $3.2 billion has been invested in Kansas through the bipartisan infrastructure law – from expanding statewide rural broadband access, lead pipe replacements in Olathe, safety initiatives in KCK, and long-overdue upgrades to K-68 in Miami County.
