Davids Backs Emergency Funding Bill to Save USCIS Jobs in Kansas City

July 16, 2020

Representative Sharice Davids is backing an emergency funding bill that would provide $1.2 billion to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in an effort to save thousands of jobs in Kansas City.

Due to coronavirus-related budget shortfalls, USCIS has announced potential furloughs for 3,100 workers in the Greater Kansas City Area. It would be among the largest mass layoffs in the Kansas City area.

"At a time when so many Kansans have already lost their job security and are facing enormous financial strain, Congress must do everything we can to prevent any further economic devastation. This emergency funding will help preserve jobs, protect the livelihoods of Kansas families, and allow legal immigration applications to be processed without interruption. I'm calling on my colleagues in Congress to take up this bipartisan bill right away," said Davids.

Since the potential furloughs were announced, Davids has worked alongside Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, congressional leadership and the committees of jurisdiction to advocate for emergency funding. Davids and Cleaver have also called on USCIS to immediately put forward a plan to save these jobs should funding be secured.
