Davids Continues Farm Bill Listening Tour in Miami County
BUCYRUS, KS – Today, Representative Sharice Davids continued her Farm Bill listening tour in Miami County, visiting two farms and meeting with local producers and agriculture community leaders. Her tour will continue at farms, ranches, and businesses across the Third District as Davids prepares to consider the 2023 Farm Bill through her position on the House Agriculture Committee. This package of legislation is typically renewed every five years and determines federal agriculture and nutrition policy impacting Kansas families both urban and rural.
"I'm touring farms and businesses all across the district on this listening tour to make sure I'm prepared for the upcoming Farm Bill discussion in Congress," said Davids. "We have an amazing diversity of agricultural businesses in our community, and I've seen that this week—from poultry to row crops to Pygmy goats. I'm looking forward to taking what I've learned and working on a bipartisan Farm Bill that supports our entire food system and economy."
"We were grateful to have Sharice come to our family farm to educate her on some of the key agriculture issues we face today. I hope we found a common ground in ideas and information that she will be able to take back with her to Washington D.C.. We look forward to building a relationship with Rep. Davids and her team as she continues her term as the Kansas 3rd District U.S. Representative," said Hayden Guetterman.
Davids toured Madd House Hill in Paola, a family-owned goat farm that produces artisan goat milk products. She then traveled to Bucyrus and toured Guetterman Brothers Family Farms, where she hosted a roundtable conversation with representatives from the Miami County Conservation District, Kansas Corn, Kansas Soybeans, and Farm Service Agency. They discussed key topics in this year's farm bill, including protecting crop insurance policies that farmers rely on and supporting Market Access Programs so Kansas producers can get their products to global markets.
Guetterman Brothers Family Farms, which Davids toured after visiting Bauman's Cedar Valley Farms in Garnett and the Ottawa Co-op earlier this week, is a no-till row crop farm in in Bucyrus primarily producing corn, soybeans and wheat. Their operation began in 1966 and is now operated by Paul Guetterman and his four sons. Davids also toured Madd House Hill and met with the Maddock family, who raise Nigerian Dwarf goats and produce goat milk soaps and other artisan products.
Last year, Davids has hosted U.S. Department of Agriculture Undersecretaries Jennifer Lester Moffitt and Xochitl Torres Small for visits to the Third District to learn about the area's meatpacking and dairy industries, respectively. She was also named a Friend of the Farm Bureau by the Kansas Farm Bureau in 2022.
