Davids Joins President Biden for Pulse National Memorial Signing, Pride Month Event
Today, Representative Sharice Davids joined President Biden in the White House as he officially designated Orlando's Pulse Nightclub as a national memorial, honoring the 49 lives lost in the deadliest attack on the LGBTQ+ community in modern history. Davids, a Co-Chair of the House Equality Caucus, then attended a Pride Month event with the President, First Lady, and Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
"I appreciated the opportunity to attend today's events at the White House, which showcased the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community as well as the barriers we face. We stood in solemn remembrance of the 49 lives lost at Pulse Nightclub in 2016, designating the site a national memorial, and then we came together to commemorate Pride Month, honoring the strength and joy that persists in the LGBTQ+ community," said Davids. "Today, I was reminded of the long and often painful struggle for equality as we celebrated the strides we have made so far. Both of these reflections are important pieces of Pride Month, and I am grateful to have the President's support in this effort."
Along with The President and First Lady, Davids joined survivors of the Pulse attack, members of the Equality Caucus and the Florida Congressional Delegation at today's bill signing event. She was also present at the National Pulse Memorial bill enrollment ceremony earlier this month. Additionally, Davids continues to champion the Equality Act, a landmark anti-discrimination bill that would give LGBTQ+ people the same protections afforded to other groups under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. She presided over the House floor in February as the Equality Act was passed with bipartisan support.
