Davids Shares New Federal Funding Opportunities for Local Law Enforcement Departments
Today, Representative Sharice Davids announced new federal funding for state and local police departments to increase public safety resources in Kansas' Third District. Continuing her effort to bring available federal resources home to Kansas to address the community's priorities, in March, Davids sent a letter to local law enforcement authorities, ensuring their awareness of how to apply for these grant opportunities.
"Whenever there is federal funding on the table, I'm going to do everything I can so Kansas gets its fair share, especially when it comes to making our communities safer," said Davids. "I'll continue supporting our local law enforcement officials in Kansas and advocating for them to receive the resources needed to do their jobs better."
In her letter to local departments and agencies, Davids shared information on three competitive grants administered through the Department of Justice's (DOJ) Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) office. The grants include:
- Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA) Program - to create new or enhance programs for officer mental and emotional health and support services.
- COPS Anti-Methamphetamine Program (CAMP) - to advance public safety by investigating activities related to methamphetamine.
- Anti-Heroin Task Force (AHTF) - to advance public safety by investigating activities related to heroine.
Davids has supported local law enforcement through COPS grants in the past. In 2021, she announced three grants to improve mental and behavioral health services with law enforcement throughout Kansas' Third District. She also successfully requested federal funding, administered through the COPS program, for the Olathe Police Department to upgrade technology in their Mobile Command Post, which is used during critical incidents within the Kansas City metro to provide real time assessment.
More information on the DOJ's COPS grants and needed application materials can be found here. While the deadlines for the three grants vary, the first comes this Friday, April 14. Law enforcement should submit their applications at grants.gov and can request a letter of support from Rep. Davids by sending an email to patrick.hampton@mail.house.gov.
