Davids Statement on House Leadership’s Politically-Motived Israel Aid Package
Today, Representative Sharice Davids released the following statement after voting against a politically-motived plan that would fail to protect Israel and undermine America’s national security. Instead, she urges House leadership to call a vote on the recently agreed-upon bipartisan national security package that supports Israel and Ukraine and secures the southern border.
“Since coming to Congress, I’ve supported security assistance for Israel, our close ally in the Middle East, and I remain committed to that support and the release of all remaining hostages. However, this legislation puts political games ahead of saving innocent lives and America’s national security. The current House leadership has rejected a separate bipartisan agreement that would help Israel defend their citizens, ensure critical humanitarian aid in Gaza and the West Bank, and secure our country’s southern border. I urge Speaker Johnson to put politics aside, truly acknowledge the gravity of our national security challenges at home and abroad, and bring this bipartisan agreement up for a vote.”
Background:
In her commitment to reaffirm Israel’s right to self-defense and protect innocent lives, Davids condemned the violence and urged the U.S. Department of State to continue working with the governments of Israel and Egypt to enable a steady supply of humanitarian assistance, which they later did. She also joined her colleagues in calling for increased support for Israel’s defense systems and continues pushing for a prompt humanitarian response in the West Bank and Gaza, both of which are included in recently announced supplemental request.
In addition to providing no humanitarian aid during this crisis, today’s partisan proposal would jeopardize funding for other allies, like Ukraine, during times of conflict. It also fails to address the pressing issues at our southern border.Davids is urging Speaker Johnson to call a vote on the recently announced national security supplemental that prioritizes the security of Israel and addresses border concerns. The President threatened to veto today’s partisan package.
