Davids Statement on House Leadership’s Unserious Partisan Israel Aid Package

November 2, 2023

Representative Sharice Davids released the following statement after voting against a partisan plan that would fail to protect Israel and undermine America’s national security.

“Since coming to Congress, I have always supported security assistance for Israel, our close ally in the Middle East, and I remain committed to that support. The irresponsible and partisan legislation pushed by House leadership, however, puts political games ahead of both saving innocent lives and America’s national security. It also does nothing to deliver critically needed humanitarian aid in Gaza and the West Bank. We must work in a bipartisan manner to ensure security assistance for Israel against Hamas, as we have consistently done during times of conflict. I’ll continue working together with Republicans and Democrats to achieve that goal and to deliver the necessary and adequate humanitarian aid to civilians in the Middle East.”

Background:

In her commitment to reaffirm Israel’s right to self-defense and protect innocent lives, Davids previously condemned the violence and urged the U.S. Department of State to continue working with the governments of Israel and Egypt to enable a steady supply of humanitarian assistance, which they later did. She also joined her colleagues in calling for increased support for Israel’s defense systems and continues pushing for a prompt humanitarian response in the West Bank and Gaza, both of which are included in the President’s emergency supplemental request alongside aid to Ukraine.

In addition to providing no humanitarian aid during this crisis, today’s partisan proposal would jeopardize funding for other allies, like Ukraine, during times of conflict. It also would result in the loss of $49 billion in revenue and increase the national deficit by $24 billion — all to give tax breaks to large corporations and the top one percent of America’s wealthiest individuals. The President has threatened to veto the partisan package. Davids continues to work towards a serious bipartisan path forward to protect Israel and save lives.
