Davids Statement on Opposition to HEROES Act; Need for Bipartisan Cooperation
Representative Sharice Davids issued the following statement on her opposition of the HEROES Act and the need for bipartisan, bicameral cooperation:
“The coronavirus has caused unparalleled devastation to Kansans – jeopardizing their health and wellbeing, as well as their financial security and ability to plan for the future. Solving these challenges will require members of Congress to work together on targeted relief that can become law and provide real help to those who are suffering. Unfortunately, the HEROES Act does not accomplish that goal, and I respectfully voted against it today.
“This bill did include some of the much-needed measures I’ve fought for – like funding for state and local governments to pay frontline workers and avoid painful cuts to our public schools, improved small business relief programs with stronger oversight measures, and open enrollment under the ACA so people can get the health coverage they need. But the partisan nature and wide scope of this bill makes it doomed upon arrival in the Senate – only further delaying the aid that Kansans desperately need. Instead we should use these measures as the foundation for a bipartisan relief package that delivers real solutions to the urgent challenges Kansans face in the wake of this public health crisis. That’s what I’ll continue to push for.”
