Davids Statement on Top Three Insulin Producers Lowering Drug Costs

March 17, 2023

Representative Sharice Davids released the following statement as the top three insulin producers, who make up about 90% of the insulin market in the U.S., announced they'll cut or cap the price of insulin:

"For too long, Kansans have been forced to pay extremely high prices for insulin while drug companies rake in massive profits. That's why, after voting to cap the cost of insulin for Kansas seniors last year, I immediately called for these savings to be extended to insulin users of all ages. Now, the three largest insulin producers in America are following Congress' lead and substantially reducing their prices. I applaud their choice and I will continue to support legislation that instates a $35 monthly cap at the federal level, because it will save not just money, but people's lives."

Background

Davids, who was the only member of the Kansas delegation who voted to cap the cost of insulin at $35 for Medicare beneficiaries, has repeatedlypushed to expand this cap for all insulin users. To highlight the difference this lower cost makes for Kansans, Davids sat down with Julie Cogley of Overland Park, whose insulin costs decreased by over $650 some months thanks to the new cap.
