Davids Statement on Trump’s Tariffs Raising Costs for Families
Representative Sharice Davids issued the following statement after President Trump announced that 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada — two of the United States' largest trading partners — would begin tomorrow, March 4, after a one-month delay. These tariffs are expected to raise prices for families by thousands of dollars a year.
“Kansans are already feeling the squeeze, and now President Trump is moving forward with tariffs that could raise costs for hardworking folks and put even more pressure on our agricultural sector. Instead of prioritizing our families and farmers, the President continues to enact policies that benefit big corporations and special interests. I’ve been focused on lowering costs — whether it’s groceries, gas, or prescription drugs — and I’ll keep working to ensure Kansas families, farmers, and small businesses aren’t left paying the price for these reckless economic policies.”
Background:
Experts say tomorrow’s tariff policy could raise prices for an array of products ranging from groceries to gasoline, the latter rising by as much as 70 cents per gallon. Overall, these tariffs could cost families thousands of dollars per year, making it even harder for Kansans to keep up with everyday expenses. The right-leaning Tax Foundation found previous tariffs enacted during President Trump’s first term were paid for by U.S. consumers and businesses.
Davids previously wrote an essay in Newsweek criticizing President Donald Trump’s recent executive orders, arguing that they will hurt hardworking Kansans and favor corporations. At a recent U.S. House Agriculture Committee hearing, she also highlighted the challenges Kansas agriculture producers could face due to trade disruptions caused by these tariffs.
