Davids Urges President Biden to Support Kansas’ State of Emergency

February 16, 2021
Press Release

As Kansas continues to experience extreme weather conditions, Representative Sharice Davids has urged President Joe Biden to support Governor Laura Kelly’s state of emergency however possible.

“Due to extreme weather conditions and the strain it’s placing on Kansas, I’m calling on President Biden to use Governor Kelly's emergency declaration and every avenue available to the federal government to get help to our state. This emergency highlights the need for long-term investments in infrastructure so we are better equipped to handle extreme weather events, but in the near-term, we need to get immediate assistance to Kansans as they deal with this disaster,” said Davids.

The full letter can be found below.

Dear President Biden,

As you are aware, Kansas is experiencing extreme winter storms which have resulted in tremendous strain on our electrical grid. I am in close communication with electric providers and utilities in my congressional district and want to convey to you the seriousness of the challenges they are facing so that you can support Kansas Governor Laura Kelly’s state of emergency declaration however possible.

According to The National Weather Service, wind chills in our area dropped as low as minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas, and temperatures aren’t expected to be above zero degrees in the immediate future. Providers have instituted planned, temporary blackouts to reduce and distribute load in the near term, but the danger to consumers remains and outages will continue until this weather breaks.

This emergency, of course, highlights the need for long-term investment in a modern power grid that allows for better control and efficiency in transmission, but in the near-term, please use Governor Kelly's emergency declaration and every avenue available to the federal government in the assistance of Kansans as they deal with this disaster and extreme weather conditions.

Sincerely,

Representative Sharice Davids

Member of Congress
