Rep. Sharice Davids advocated for Kansas City-area infrastructure needs during a Third District visit from Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Chair Peter DeFazio (OR-04) and Aviation Subcommittee Chair Rick Larsen (WA-02) this past weekend. Davids is also a member of the Committee and Vice Chair of the Aviation Subcommittee.

“I’m proud to be the first member from Kansas on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in nearly a decade, especially given the Kansas City Metro area’s strategic position in our country’s heartland as a major transportation hub,” said Davids. “In order to best represent our region, I have to ensure the Committee is in tune with the needs here. That’s why I was glad to bring Chairmen DeFazio and Larsen to Kansas this weekend to discuss the opportunities and challenges of the Third District, like the need to expand U.S. 69.”

The Congressmembers toured U.S. 69 with Kansas Secretary of Transportation Julie Lorenz, Overland Park Mayor Carl Gerlach and members of the Overland Park City Chamber of Commerce. The delegation viewed congestion on the highway, a major safety concern and hindrance to the economic growth of the region.

Following the tour, the delegation met with local stakeholders from across the Third District to discuss how the federal government can better support Kansas City-area infrastructure.

“I was pleased to join Representative Davids this past weekend in her home district to tour and learn about local infrastructure needs,” said Chairman Peter DeFazio. “Transportation systems across the country are in dire need of repair. And that is why I am glad to have Representative Davids on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. She has hit the ground running since coming to Congress to come up with collaborative solutions to fix our nation’s crumbling infrastructure.”

Davids and Larsen also toured the Kansas City Air Route Traffic Control Center in Olathe to hear directly from employees there about the aviation work they are doing.

“Representative Davids is a valuable member of Congress and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee,” said Rep. Rick Larsen. “Her efforts to secure robust federal investment in the nation’s infrastructure helps to ensure safety and create jobs. You can't have a big league economy with little league infrastructure. It was great to see Kansas’ major transportation and infrastructure projects and the impact of Representative Davids’ dedication to her constituents.”

The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure has jurisdiction over all modes of transportation and other aspects of our national infrastructure.
