Rep. Sharice Davids Secures Funding for National Levee Safety Initiative in House-Passed Appropriations Bill

June 19, 2019

Rep. Sharice Davids today announced House passage of $79 million in federal funding she requested for the National Levee Safety Initiative (NLSI), specifically $15 million for the National Flood Inventory and $20 million for the Inspection of Completed Flood Control Projects, to help keep Kansas families safe.

"The safety of Kansas families will always be my top priority, and these investments in flood safety programs will help ensure our families and communities are protected even as we face increasing weather disasters. I'm proud to have worked with my colleagues to secure this critical funding, and I will continue to fight for investments that benefit the Third District," said Davids.

Davids played a key role in securing this funding by formally requesting the House Appropriations Committee to include the following items in the Energy and Water funding bill that passed the House today as part of H.R. 2740.

  • National Flood Inventory: $15 million, an increase of $10.5 million over the budget request.
  • Inspection of Completed Flood Control Projects: $20 million, an increase of $5 million over the budget request.

The US Army Corps of Engineers operates 746 miles of levees in Kansas, including over 230 miles of levees in the Third District, that will benefit from this funding.
