WATCH: Davids Highlights Needed Airline Safety, Transparency in Consumer Fees

March 23, 2023

Today, during a U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing, Representative Sharice Davids spoke with airline professionals about how the overall flying experience, including safety and transparency of hidden fees for baggage and refunds, could be improved. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has encouraged airlines to stop charging fees for young passengers to sit next to an adult companion, but most domestic airlines still do.

"Hard-working Kansans are already struggling with high costs at the gas pump and grocery store, and they shouldn't be caught off guard by surprise airline fees, inhibiting them from making the best financial decision for their families," said Davids. "Through the upcoming FAA reauthorization, I'm working to improve the flying experience, from buying a flight ticket to picking up luggage at baggage claim, and ensuring the Department of Transportation institutes regulatory practices to adequately protect Kansans."

In September, DOT proposed a rule that would protect travelers by ensuring they know the full price of airline tickets before they buy. The rule would require airlines and online search sites to disclose up front any fees for guardians to sit next to their child, baggage, and changes or cancellations. In 2021, passengers paid a total of $5.97 billion for airline baggage and cancellation or change fees.

This year, the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee plans to take up the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) reauthorization, which will address changing airspace demands and technologies, including hidden ancillary fees and January's FAA system failure that came under scrutiny by Davids and her colleagues.
