WATCH: Davids Takes Stand to Halt Vote on Restrictive Reproductive Health Care Bill

January 18, 2024

Monday marks 51-year anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Today, Representative Sharice Davids offered the official motion on the U.S. House floor to prevent a vote on a restrictive reproductive health care bill. Following her speech where she called out extremist actors for spreading false information and limiting Americans' health care choices, Davids voted twice to protect access to choice. Despite Kansans’ strong support of reproductive freedoms, extremists at the Kansas state level have recently doubled down on their quest to restrict reproductive health care access in 2024.

“After Roe was overturned, folks were scared about what this meant for their families and future generations,” said Davids. “Even though Americans have made clear that politicians have no place in personal health care decisions, we’re still seeing these extremist policies pushed across the country. A woman’s health care decisions should absolutely remain between herself, her family, and her doctor. It’s up to us to stand up for our rights and fight back against extremism.”

Earlier today, Davids voted against two bills that would restrict access to reproductive health care.

  • The first would require educational institutions to distribute a limited set of resources and information to students about their existing rights — but NOT information about reproductive health care or contraception.
    • This bill is backed by prominent anti-abortion groups including the Susan B. Anthony List, Students for Life Action, and the Family Research Council.
  • The second would ensure states can continue funneling funds meant for food, rent, and childcare to "crisis pregnancy centers," which provide harmful disinformation to people seeking access to reproductive health care.
    • These facilities have endangered patients’ lives, have little oversight, and are widely considered unethical by health care professionals and the American Medical Association.

Davids has been a champion for increased access to reproductive and sexual health care. She introduced legislation to boost access to birth control and other reproductive health care services and joined 240 Members of Congress to file an amicus brief to keep mifepristone, a safe and effective medication used by millions of women, on the market.

Davids is a proud member of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus and cosponsor of the Women’s Health Protection Act and other key legislation to protect reproductive rights. Read a transcript of Davids’ speech on the House floor here.
