January 22, 2025

Subcommittee focused on farm commodities and risk management

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Sharice Davids (D-KS-03) was named Ranking Member of the General Farm Commodities, Risk Management, and Credit Subcommittee of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee. The National Crop Insurance Services, headquartered in Davids’ district, plays a crucial role in providing farmers nationwide with vital risk management tools, further underscoring the importance of her leadership in this area.

"Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, and our policies must reflect the needs of our producers and make life more affordable for consumers," said Davids. "In this role, I’ll work across the aisle to ensure the Farm Bill strengthens the crop insurance and lending programs that Kansas farmers and ranchers depend on. I’m ready to get to work supporting the hardworking producers who feed and fuel our nation."

The General Farm Commodities, Risk Management, and Credit Subcommittee oversees policies related to commodity programs, crop insurance, and agricultural credit — all essential to ensuring stability and support for Kansas agriculture. Kansas, one of the leading agricultural states in the nation, relies on robust federal programs to manage risks, respond to unpredictable market conditions, and provide producers with the resources they need to thrive.

As the Farm Bill reauthorization process continues, Davids plans to prioritize expanding risk management tools, supporting beginning and underserved farmers, and strengthening financial resources for rural communities. Her appointment reflects a commitment to addressing the challenges facing Kansas producers, from extreme weather and market volatility to high costs for both farmers and consumers.

To support Kansas’ agriculture economy, Davids has brought U.S. Department of Agriculture Undersecretaries to Kansas’ Third District to discuss the region's meatpacking and dairy industries. She also led a Farm Bill listening tour across the district and convened over 20 stakeholders, including former Senator Pat Roberts, to advocate for a Farm Bill benefiting all Kansans. In 2022, she was named a Friend of the Farm Bureau by the Kansas Farm Bureau.
