Davids Statement on President Trump’s Joint Address

March 4, 2025

Tonight, Representative Sharice Davids offered the following statement on President Trump's Joint Address:

"President Trump made commitments tonight on supporting law enforcement, addressing the fentanyl crisis, and boosting America's competitiveness. I’m ready to work with both parties to make progress on these issues.

“However, while many Americans chose the President based on his promises to lower costs, his politically motivated, reckless actions have had the opposite effect — driving up expenses for hardworking Kansans while favoring billionaires. His new tariffs will increase the price of gas, groceries, and other necessities, as large companies pass higher costs onto families, forcing them to pay thousands more each year. And his attacks on the bipartisan domestic manufacturing legislation I supported would threaten good-paying jobs and weaken our economy.

“I’m focused on finding real solutions to make life more affordable — including by protecting Social Security and Medicare — and will continue working with anyone to make it happen. I hope the President will join me in that bipartisan effort, but rest assured, I’ll keep standing up against extreme policies that hurt hardworking folks back home in Kansas.”

Background:

Earlier today, Davids and Joe Newland, President of the Kansas Farm Bureau, hosted a virtual press call to discuss the urgent need for a strong, bipartisan Farm Bill that provides certainty for Kansas farmers and lowers grocery costs. They also addressed the impact of ongoing trade policies, including new tariffs on Mexico and Canada that are poised to raise prices for Kansas’ agricultural producers.

Davids also released a statement yesterday on the previously mentioned tariffs, saying they “could raise costs for hardworking folks” and “benefit big corporations and special interests.” Experts say these tariff policies could cost families thousands of dollars per year, making it even harder for Kansans to keep up with everyday expenses. The right-leaning Tax Foundation found previous tariffs enacted during President Trump’s first term were paid for by U.S. consumers and businesses.
