Joe Newland Warns of Negative Impact of New Tariffs on Kansas Agriculture

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Representative Sharice Davids announced that she will be joined by Joe Newland, President of the Kansas Farm Bureau, at President Trump’s Joint Address. During a virtual press call earlier today, Davids and Newland discussed the urgent need for a strong, bipartisan Farm Bill that provides certainty for Kansas farmers and lowers grocery costs. They also addressed the impact of ongoing trade policies, including potential tariffs on Mexico and Canada, and the importance of protecting Kansas’ agricultural economy.

“I’m honored to have Joe Newland joining me at tonight’s address as we continue pushing for a strong, bipartisan Farm Bill that supports Kansas farmers, ranchers, and producers,” said Davids. “Our state’s farms and agricultural businesses are essential to our economy. By working across party lines, we can provide the certainty our agriculture sector needs while it them from irresponsible trade policies and cuts that threaten the strength of our farm economy.”

“The Kansas Farm Bureau exists to strengthen agriculture and the lives of Kansans through advocacy, education, and service. What better way to advocate for agriculture than to communicate with Members from both sides of the aisle,” said Joe Newland, President, Kansas Farm Bureau. “Trade is extremely important for Kansas agriculture…and I’m super glad to be here. Thank you for the opportunity, [Rep. Davids.]”

Yesterday, President Donald Trump announced that 25 percent tariffs would be placed on Mexico and Canada starting today. These tariffs are expected to devastate agricultural communities and raise prices for hardworking families by an estimated $1,200 per year. Davids previously highlighted the challenges Kansas farmers face due to trade uncertainty and funding disruptions. The American Farm Bureau has also warned that tariffs on major agricultural markets could severely impact producers.

To support Kansas’ agricultural economy, Davids has brought U.S. Department of Agriculture Undersecretaries to Kansas’ Third District to discuss the region's meatpacking and dairy industries. She also has led a Farm Bill listening tour across the district and convened more than 20 stakeholders — including former Senator Pat Roberts and Newland — to advocate for a Farm Bill that benefits all Kansans. In 2022, she was named a Friend of the Farm Bureau by the Kansas Farm Bureau.

The President’s Joint Address will take place tonight, March 4, at the U.S. Capitol.
