Federal funding could help jumpstart a project to upgrade flood containment systems along Turkey Creek.

Part of a federal $1.5 trillion spending bill will include a $500 thousand earmark for a design project to determine possible solutions for ongoing flooding issues along the creek. Congresswoman Sharice Davids spearheaded the effort to include the funding measure in the bill.

Eventually, improvements to the waterway could remove the floodplain designation for downtown Merriam, which could spur development through the neighborhood.

U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids announced the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded a total of $4,113,744 to two Head Start programs in Kansas' 3rd District.

These Head Start programs work daily to emphasize children's cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. Children who participate in Head Start programs receive benefits that appear immediately and last a lifetime, according to a spokesman.

HHS Head Start grant recipients include:

Following the passage of a federal spending bill Thursday night, U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids has announced that $15.7 million of it will come to Kansas' third district.

The pair are set to be honored just seven days after both School Resource Officer Erik Clark and Assistant Principal Kaleb were injured in a shooting involving an armed student.
