A Kansas lawmaker calls for gun safety and increased mental health help in schools five days after a shooting inside an office at Olathe East High School sent three people to a hospital.

Rep. Sharice Davids, D-Kan., made the plea during a speech on the House floor Wednesday morning.

"Students hid in classrooms, sending texts that every parent dreads receiving. Someone shooting inside the school," David said.

Pat & Rachel's Gardens, an Olathe organic food packaging and distribution business, received almost $50,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Awards.

Kansas' District 3 U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids announced the grant in an emailed press release on Thursday. The grant program is aimed at addressing food security and could support the economy in the state of Kansas "by bringing homegrown and locally-sourced foods to the Kansas City area all while focusing on sustainability," Davids says.

U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids visited Olathe-based bioscience firm Ronawk to highlight the value of local companies that are working to return manufacturing and competitive research innovation jobs to the U.S. The stop Wednesday was part of a push by some members of Congress to adopt the America COMPETES Act, which passed the U.S. House earlier this month, largely along party lines.

Davids, a Democrat, voted for the bill.

U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, D-3rd Dist., recently announced federal funding for six local organizations to strengthen law enforcement and community-based responsiveness to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, rape and stalking.

Kansas received more than $1.8 million through these awards, with six agencies receiving $511,813.

As gas prices hit prices not seen for decades, Congresswoman Sharice Davids has introduced a bill to help Kansans spend less at the pump.

On Tuesday, Feb. 22, U.S. Congresswoman Sharice Davids (D-KS) said she wants to lower gas prices through a temporary suspension of the federal gas tax through the end of 2022.

Davids said the move will save Kansans money at a time where prices are reaching their highest points in decades.

As gas prices continue to rise across the nation, some lawmakers are proposing a short-term solution.

U.S. Congresswoman representing Kansas Sharice Davids announced the Gas Prices Relief Act Tuesday.

The bill would suspend the federal gas tax in Kansas until Jan. 1, 2023.

"I think, particularly during this time, folks are really wanting to see some relief," Davids said. "We are seeing gas prices that are up over a dollar from what they were last year."

US Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall and US Representatives Tracey Mann, Jake LaTurner, Sharice Davids and Ron Estes have recognized the federal disaster declaration for Kansas following the severe wind storms and fires that occurred in December.

Last month, after the Kansas Division of Emergency Management submitted the request for federal support, the Kansas congressional delegation urged President Biden to make the formal declaration to support the state in its recovery.

The first batch of funding from President Joe Biden's bipartisan infrastructure law, signed in November, is headed to Kansas and Missouri.

Kansas Rep. Sharice Davids and Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, II, who both played a role in passing the bipartisan plan, announced Wednesday that the funding was on its way.

The funding aims to improve public transportation systems, support transportation jobs and create additional investments.

Davids announced that the first round of transit funding would bring over $17.4 million to Kansas.
