TOPEKA — U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids grabbed a shovel and flipped a chunk of dirt with state and local officials to mark the start of a $61 million road project in support of the 4,000-job Panasonic Energy electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant.

DE SOTO, Kan. (KCTV) - A groundbreaking ceremony kicked off construction for road improvements near Panasonic’s $4 billion electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility in De Soto, Kansas.

 

The $61 million road construction project will include upgrades along 103rd Street between Evening Star Road and the Lexington Avenue/K-10 interchange, and a one-mile stretch of Astra Parkway south of 103rd Street.

 

The infrastructure improvements along the roadways near the plant are scheduled to be completed late next year.

The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) was awarded nearly $15 million in federal funding, most of which will go toward bus storage improvements.

 

Nearly $10.4 million was awarded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and will be used to upgrade bus storage and electric-vehicle charging facilities. Upgrades will include heating and cooling improvements, fire system updates and roof repairs.

The Kjelshus family of Olathe recently welcomed their daughter Charlie to the world. The family planned to put Charlie on one parent’s insurance, but what's referred to as the "birthday rule" put her on the other. This became more significant due to the fact that Charlie required seven days in the neonatal intensive care unit, racking up $270,951 in charges.

When Elsie Chen tried to renew her U.S. passport this spring, she thought seven weeks would be enough time for her application to make its way through the State Department bureaucracy before a much-anticipated trip to Taiwan in June to meet her boyfriend’s family.

 

She guessed wrong. As Chen’s flight approached with no word on her passport, the 25-year-old Kansas City nurse began spending days dialing an overloaded official hotline before learning that she had to dial right when the line opened at 8 a.m. to have any chance of speaking with someone.
